What do Orlando and the terrible shooting of innocent people have to do with Friendship? Let me explain …
Friendship isn’t about whom you have known the longest… It’s about who came, and never left your side. – Unknown
Before I get to the sad situation in Orlando, please allow me to share about friendship, love, blogging and life.
I met with a very successful blogger last week. He’s a good friend whom I totally respect and appreciate his passion for blogging and helping other bloggers (i.e. ME). When I say ‘successful’ I mean SUCCESSFUL. He and his wife get more views to a single video (on food/recipes) than visitors to Girlfriendology in a month.
As supportive as he is, I felt like I should give up on Girlfriendology. People eat every day so food blogs and videos are super popular. Blogs on friendship, female friendship – like Girlfriendology, get little traffic. (And, as someone who has been working on this blog for over a decade and not making very much money, it is a bit discouraging.) Should I give up on my passion for inspiring women to be better friends?
Then, Sunday morning I awoke to an alert on my phone about 50 people dying in a shooting in Orlando. I was, as we all were, instantly in shock and hoped it wasn’t true. Then, the alert came through that it was a GLBT dance club. My heart sunk and I prayed it wasn’t true.
Back to my blogger friend. As I pondered giving up Girlfriendology and changing my focus to something more popular and lucrative, I thought of those poor people in Orlando. They texted their friends and family. They tried to protect their friends. They clung to their loved ones. At that moment when life was tragic and scary, they reached out to the people they loved.
Friendship isn’t served three meals a day. It is part of our DNA. We NEED friends. We NEED a support system of people who love us no matter if we’re straight or GLBT, successful or not, skinny or fat or old or young or not. Especially with females, our friendships make us healthier, happier, less stressed and live longer. Before Love, comes Friendship. Without Friendship, there’s no one to call, pray for, miss, or love.
So, I’m going to keep on blogging on friendship. And, I’m going to keep on praying that this inspiration brings even one person closer to a friend. Because, like in Orlando, I want us all to have friends who are there for us in good and bad times.
Thanks for being here on Girlfriendology. I’d love if you would share this/Girlfriendology with a friend. My mission is to make the world a better place, one friendship at a time. To be there when friends are going through tough stuff.
As Lin-Manuel Miranda said: “Love is Love is Love is Love is Love is Love.” It doesn’t have to be romantic love. We LOVE our Friends. Especially those Friends who become Family. Love IS love. And I love the community of women who love their friends. So, I’ll still be here. And hope you come back and visit Girlfriendology too. Thanks, my friend.
