Do you drink enough water each day, girlfriend? (Read to see exactly how much your body needs!) There are days when I have no trouble drinking enough–and then there are the days when even drinking one drop seems like too much…
Girlfriend Guru LISA MCDANIEL BROWN shares some great advice for how to treat ourselves well this summer. And don’t we deserve to take care of ourselves? Now, where did I put that water bottle?
Summer has officially arrived – that means longer, warmer days, sunshine, and vacations. But, here’s an important question – do you have a summer food and fitness plan?
Never heard of a food and fitness plan? Or have you never really thought about it?
We all seem to plan summer vacations, summer activities for the kids, summer projects around the house, summer school; the list goes on and on. Why not make a plan for being healthier and feeling better this summer?
To help you create your own summer food and fitness plan here are five things you can do to have a healthier summer. Choose to commit to a couple of these or commit to them all!
5. Drink more……water
Despite the fact that my BFF, Leslie, got me started on a Sangria kick this summer (hey, it has fruit in it!) we all need to stay hydrated. How much water should we drink everyday? Try to drink half your body weight in ounces of water each day. For a 150 pound person, that’s 75 ounces of water which is equal to about five bottles of Aquafina. And don’t forget to give your kids and pets lots of water all summer long!
4. Eat summer fruits and veggies
One of the great joys of summer is all the food that’s in season – in June and July we have wonderful fruits and veggies coming straight from of the garden: watermelon, cantaloupe, raspberries, plums, blueberries, cherries, peaches, kiwi, grapes, corn, cucumbers, tomatoes, green beans, lettuce, peppers, zucchini, and summer squash, just to name a few! By the way, these are all foods that will help keep you cooler in warm temperatures.
3. Eat local
Support your local farmers by shopping local! If you look closely enough you will find farmer’s markets all over the place all summer long. Many of these farmers grow organic food (yes!). The time it takes to get food from their farm to your plate can be astonishingly low, maybe even the same day! So shop local!
2. Get outside
Do anything outside. Breathe some fresh air. Enjoy a workout outdoors instead of at the gym. Work in the yard (or if you’re like me that means pull some weeds), mow the lawn, play with the kids, walk the dog, have the girls over for a deck party – just get outside!
1. Get some Vitamin D
Our primary source of vitamin D is the sun. Soak it up, just don’t get burned. Expose as much as you can of your skin to the sun every day for about 10-15 minutes. You are the best judge of how much sun exposure your skin can take. I repeat, soak up the sun, but please, don’t get a sunburn! There are so many health benefits from Vitamin D I can’t list them all here, but it includes everything from bone health to immunity and disease prevention.
Have a wonderful, healthy summer!
