Meet Plan Go Ottsworld“Confidence is the foundation of friendship. If we give it, we will receive it. “

Have you ever dreamed of doing something but never gotten around to it? (Or dreamed of doing something totally different with your life?) Maybe we just need a little ‘Confidence’ to do what we want to do and go where we want to go?!

Guest blogger SHERRY OTT is one of those fabulous girlfriends who has definitely “gotten around to it!” She is a self-proclaimed “refugee from the corporate world” who has traveled to all kinds of amazing places. Read her story of how having a girlfriend can help make the dream a reality.

How often do you find yourself saying, “No way I can’t do that!” about some potentially embarrassing, crazy idea.  However, what if your girlfriend said, “Let’s do it together!” All of a sudden the impossible or silly seems within reach.  Maybe, just maybe, you could do it if you had a ‘partner in crime.’

Just as I love travel and adventure that pushes my limits, I also prefer my personal relationships to do the same.  So when I came up with a crazy idea to publicize my business and upcoming travel events during a typical New York City commute I simply sent out this tweet:

Meet Plan Go Travel

I honestly never planned on actually doing it.  I had come up with the idea while I was sitting on the subway commuting one day and looked around at the captive audience of disgruntled, worn out cube dwellers.  I thought to myself, these people really could use a career break. It was simply a funny thought; something I hoped might get some retweets.

Within minutes I received a tweet from my girlfriend Charlie that made my heart skip.  That familiar feeling of excitement and fear you get when you are looking down your first blue ski run overcame me.  Without even thinking I wrote back and the groundwork was laid before I could even think twice; it was exhilarating.

travel planning an adventure in New York

Charlie is a relatively new girlfriend of mine, but from the moment I met her at a book reading event and saw her photography work, her writing, and her curated art shows, I knew that we had much in common; mainly a passion for doing something different in life. I love the fact that even at 41 years old I’m still meeting fabulous women that I immediately connect with.  Charlie is a risk taker, a firestarter, a life hacker – and I love that about her.  For some reason when she answered back via Twitter, my fears subsided and I knew I was in good hands.  I had a partner in crime.

I thought about all of the other women I’ve worked with who have taken career breaks and traveled for an extended time.  Many of them were intimidated to do it alone, but once they found some girlfriends to join them, it made it possible.  In fact, that’s exactly what Amanda Pressner did when she left her cushy corporate career to travel for a year.  She and her two girlfriends even wrote a book about it called The Lost Girls: Three Friends. Four Continents. One Unconventional Detour Around the World.

There is safety that you feel when you have numbers surrounding you; but more specifically there’s an added boost of confidence when those numbers are a girlfriend.

Give some thought to the things that you have always wanted to do or crazy ideas you have but you can’t quite see yourself actually doing them by yourself.  Maybe all you need is a good dose of girlfriend confidence to move you from crazy idea to fun, achievable idea. You might just want to see what kind of reaction you get to your idea by verbalizing it to one of your girlfriends.  Before you know it – you may be doing what Charlie and I did that next Monday morning; stepping out of our comfort zone and achieving thing you never thought you could do.

Watch the end result of Charlie and me joining forces that Monday morning to promote my upcoming travel events!
