Most of us women LOVE Chick Flicks.

We love to watch them, have them on in the background when we’re cleaning the house or fixing meals. We love to give and receive them as DVDs. We just LOVE a good romantic comedy, light and silly. We might happen to love an actress (Meg Ryan, Julia Roberts, Diane Lane, for example) or actor (lots of Hugh Grant, Colin Firth and Keanu Reeves fans!) that influences our theater preferences.

As much as we love chick flicks, we love to share them with our girlfriends like this list of the top 100 chick flicks that you, our Girlfriendology girlfriends (THANKS!), recommend:

TOP TEN: Great Podcasts for Women

TOP TEN: Great Podcasts for Women

Podcasts for women sqPODCASTING IS BACK! PODCASTS FOR/BY WOMEN IS COOL!

This post originally ‘aired’ in October 2008. Podcasting was growing but not mainstream. Girlfriendology, aka: Debba Haupert, took on podcasting and interviewed over 150 amazing women – including Miss America 2011 and TV ‘craft queen’ Carol Duvall. Female authors, entrepreneurs, moms, cancer-survivors, soldiers, girlfriends … we learned from their words and share wisdom.  There were very few podcasts for women then, but there were great ones and many that I have the honor of interviewing for the Girlfriendology Podcast.

It was a glorious run. But it ended. Podcasting takes time and there was little of it.

Now it’s 2017 and Podcasting is BACK! With the popularity of Serial and other podcasts, the amount of fresh audio content each week is amazing. There is something about hearing someone’s voice and their authentic story told as only they can tell it. There is power in the connection we make when we listen and learn together.

As stated above, this original post went live in 2008. It’s been very popular however some of the links and podcasts are no more. So, it’s a NEW YEAR and a NEW opportunity to share what is going on in the world of women’s podcasting. Who are inspiring? Sharing stories and wisdom? Making us laugh? Making us cry? Reminding us of the connection that all women share through our voice and stories.

10 Great Podcasts for / by Women (the 2017 version)

Note: this is our first list. There are so many others we want to feature! Come back to Girlfriendology (or sign up for our newsletter) to get more podcasts for women recommendations!

  1. ORGANIZE 365: Lisa Woodruff knows her stuff – and she knows how to keep it organized – AND she knows how to help you too! From quick tasks you can do to reclaim yourself from the crazies, to specific guidelines for your life on a regular basis, she uses her experience as a professional organizer to help women get and stay organized. (And, check out her book, The Mindset of Organization!)
  2. CAN WE TALK?: Each month on Can We Talk?, JWA’s podcast team brings you stories and conversations about Jewish women and the issues that shape our public and private lives. Alternating between a documentary style and a roundtable format, Can We Talk? includes profiles of historical and contemporary Jewish women, frank discussion of culture, politics, and current events, and little-known stories from our past and present. NOTE: you don’t have to be Jewish to listen to (and love!) this podcast! It is a beautiful telling of women and lessons we learn from each other and history.
  3. STUFF MOM NEVER TOLD YOU: I just discovered this one and love it! As they say (and I agree!): “Hosted by Cristen Conger and Caroline Ervin, Stuff Mom Never Told You is the audio podcast from HowStuffWorks that gets down to the business of being women from every imaginable angle.” Some great content like women’s relationships (** we’d love to be on to talk about Female Friendship :), technology for women (period tracking apps), women’s health, stereotypes, etc. Good gal stuff!
  4. INVISIBILIA: I love this NPR podcast on the invisible forces that control human behavior – ideas, beliefs, assumptions and emotions. Co-hosted by Lulu Miller, Hanna Rosin and Alix Spiegel, Invisibilia interweaves narrative storytelling with scientific research that will ultimately make you see your own life differently.
  5. MAGIC LESSONS: Elizabeth Gilbert, author of many books including ‘Eat, Pray, Love‘ and ‘Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear‘ takes women along on her journey through life, love and living beyond fear.
  6. HELLO FRIEND: By friend Lucrecer Braxton. First, totally jealous Lucrecer came up with this name and podcast! 🙂 (She’s a beautiful friend and great storyteller/photographer). Each week Lucrecer interviews in interesting person for their story and insights. It’s a fun, fabulous podcast (and I hope to have Lucrecer on our podcast too!).
  7. AMY PORTERFIELD: If you’re a blogger or online marketer, you probably know Amy. She’s a great resource for solid, smart information on building your audience, doing webinars, and growing your business. In a genre dominated by male podcasters, Amy is a rare female voice. Her personality comes through though so the content is fresh and applicable.
  8. GRETCHEN RUBIN: Author of The Happiness Project, etc., Gretchen, and her sister Elizabeth, have created a smart and inspiring podcast for women (and men) on happiness. From interviews with Drew Barrymore to friendly banter among sisters about life, these conversations look inside our feelings and how we can point them towards more happiness.
  9. WOMEN OF THE HOUR: With Lena Dunham is a smart, honest, insightful podcast this beautiful actress/activist. Especially her first episode on female friendship. As she describes her girlfriend(s) as: ‘Someone you can talk comfortably with about uncomfortable things’ … ‘Female friendship has been THE driving force of my life’ … ‘I love loving men, but I love knowing women.’  She defines her podcasts (for Buzzfeed) as a way to ‘celebrate the women who blow her mind.’ It’s a short series, but not short on honest insights from this wonderful woman and storyteller.
  10. BRAVE WRITER: Aimed at Home Schooling parents, the wise and wonderful Julie Bogart offers insights on raising children with curiosity, adventure, and a passion for learning.

The Wit & Wisdom of Women over Forty | Andy Rooney

The Wit & Wisdom of Women over Forty | Andy Rooney

Wine isn’t the only thing that gets better with age. Andy Rooney was attributed with the following. (While we don’t know exactly who wrote it, we think the sentiment is awesome!)

the wit and wisdom of women over fortyAndy passed away in 2011 (and said this: “I didn’t get old on purpose, it just happened. If you’re lucky, it could happen to you.”) – we’re glad he shared this insight into the wonderful women of forty-plus!

ANDY ROONEY said:

As I grow in age, I value women who are over forty most of all. Here are just a few reasons why: A woman over forty will never wake you in the middle of the night to ask, “What are you thinking?” She doesn’t care what you think.

If a woman over forty doesn’t want to watch the game, she doesn’t sit around whining about it. She does something she wants to do. And, it’s usually something more interesting.

A woman over forty knows herself well enough to be assured in who she is, what she is, what she wants and from whom. Few women past the age of forty give a hoot what you might think about her or what she’s doing.

Women over forty are dignified. They seldom have a screaming match with you at the opera or in the middle of an expensive restaurant. Of course, if you deserve it, they won’t hesitate to shoot you, if they think they can get away with it.

Older women are generous with praise, often undeserved. They know what it’s like to be unappreciated.

A woman over forty has the self-assurance to introduce you to her women friends. A younger woman with a man will often ignore even her best friend because she doesn’t trust the guy with other women. Women over forty couldn’t care less if you’re attracted to her friends because she knows her friends won’t betray her.

Women get psychic as they age. You never have to confess your sins to a woman over forty. They always know.

A woman over forty looks good wearing bright red lipstick. This is not true of younger women. Once you get past a wrinkle or two, a woman over forty is far sexier than her younger counterpart.

Older women are forthright and honest. They’ll tell you right off if you are a jerk, if you are acting like one! You don’t ever have to wonder where you stand with her.

Yes, we praise women over forty for a multitude of reasons. Unfortunately, it’s not reciprocal. For every stunning, smart, well-coiffed hot woman of forty-plus, there is a bald, paunchy relic in yellow pants making a fool of himself with some twenty-two-year-old waitress.

Ladies, I apologize.

For all those men who say, “Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free,” here’s an update for you. Now 80 percent of women are against marriage, why? Because women realize it’s not worth buying an entire pig, just to get a little sausage.”

What can you add that women know/do better than others?

For the record, we LOVE girlfriends plus or minus 40 years of age – ALL women are welcome here and are appreciated for the insights and inspiration you offer. But, we just thought this little bit of female appreciation was a great way to look at all the wonderful ways we women age and impact other lives.

45 Life Lessons – things Girlfriends Share. What Life Lessons can YOU share?

45 Life Lessons – things Girlfriends Share. What Life Lessons can YOU share?

Thankfully, we learn so much from our girlfriends.

45 Life Lessons for GirlfriendsFrom how to wear make-up and do our hair when we’re young, to how to take care of our parents when they’re old, from girlfriend advice on a job or relationship, to tips on how to save money or raise children – we’ve got our own personal ‘advisory board’ with our best friends. And, we totally believe that ‘girlfriend therapy’ is right up there with ‘retail therapy!’

We’re amazing, lucky women to have each other – and to share life and life lessons with. Following are 45 ‘Life Lessons’ that my girlfriend Margye shared with me and I thought I should share with you. Kinda helps keep everything in a great perspective. (I did have to add something to #21!)  What life lessons can you add?

1. Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good.

2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.

3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. Change the way you think.

4. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and family will. Stay in touch.

5. Pay off your credit cards every month.

6. You don’t have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

7. Cry with someone. It’s more healing than crying alone.

8. Release your children when they become adults, it’s their life now.

9. Save for retirement starting with your first pay check.

10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

11. Make peace with your past so it won’t screw up the present.

12. It’s OK to let your children see you cry.

13. Don’t compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn’t be in it.

15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye.

16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.

17. Get rid of anything that isn’t useful, beautiful or joyful.

18. Whatever doesn’t kill you really does make you stronger.

19. It’s never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else.

20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don’t take no for an answer.

21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie (drink the good wine!). Don’t save it for a special occasion. Today is special.

22. Just because you believe you are right, doesn’t mean you are. Keep an open mind.

23. Be eccentric now. Don’t wait for old age to wear purple.

24. The most important sex organ is the brain.

25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.

26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words ‘In five years, will this matter?’

27. Always choose life.

28. Forgive everyone everything.

29. What other people think of you is none of your business.

30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.

31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

32. Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

33. Believe in miracles.

34. Your job is to love your children, not choose who they should love.

35. Don’t audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.

36. Growing old beats the alternative — dying young.

37. Your children get only one childhood.

38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.

39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.

40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s, we’d grab ours back.

41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

42. The best is yet to come…

43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

44. Yield.

45. Life isn’t tied with a bow, but it’s still a gift.”

What life lessons can you add?

More Life Lessons – like: Save the earth! It’s the only planet with Chocolate! 🙂

10 Must-See Holiday Romances | Girlfriend Advice from author Susan Mallery

10 Must-See Holiday Romances | Girlfriend Advice from author Susan Mallery

What’s YOUR favorite holiday movie? Is it a romance? Silly Santa or sentimental oldie? What movie(s) do you watch every Christmas?Holiday movies Romances Susan Mallery

Holiday traditions, girlfriend traditions … combine the two and you’ve got the making of memories and sharing the holidays together. Why not invite a friend or three over to share in watching some of the great holiday romances recommended by romance author (and great girlfriend to Girlfriendology!) SUSAN MALLERY … why not?!

The following fab girlfriend advice is from our FREE eBook – The Girlfriendology Guide to Holiday Girlfriend Advice. (Did you get yours yet? Plus, share it with friends – it’s FREE!)

10 Must-See Holiday Romances

by Susan Mallery, Bestselling Author

The holiday season can be stressful, especially for women. We’re the nurturers, and whether it’s reasonable or not, many of us feel that it’s our responsibility to make the season magical for the people we love. If we can’t afford the latest gotta-have-it toys for our kids, we feel guilty. If we’re too busy to cook everything from scratch, we feel like we’re not doing it “right.” We do the majority of the shopping for husbands, boyfriends, parents, kids, friends… and we do it while working a full-time job. And yet, we feel guilty if we don’t find a few spare minutes to decorate eight dozen sugar cookies.

De-Stress Your Life during the Holiday Season

Hit the brakes, girlfriend! Let go of all that guilt and remember that what makes the holiday season truly joyful is love.

My favorite way to relax, decompress, and get into the holiday spirit is to read holiday-themed romance novels. (You might have guessed that, seeing as I’m a romance writer.) But running a close second is watching holiday-themed romantic movies. When I’m watching holiday romance movies, I don’t want any harshness – no Bad Santa cynicism for me. No, what I’m looking for is wide eyed, unvarnished optimism. Sentimental is good. My heart is open, and I’m ready to be moved.

A Romance Writer’s Top 10 Romantic Holiday Movies (in no particular order)

10. It’s a Wonderful Life – The scene with Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed on the phone, trying desperately not to let on that they were overwhelmed by each other remains one of the most romantic movies in movie history. The screen burned with sexual tension in a day when “sex” was a four-letter word.

9. Mrs. Miracle – Debbie Macomber writes wonderful Christmas romances, and this 2009 Hallmark TV movie starring Doris Roberts as a nanny who just may be magic, is a lovely screen adaptation.

8. While You Were Sleeping – The chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman felt so true that their scenes alone felt almost like eavesdropping on a real-life first date. Was I the only one who kept hoping the brother would stay in his coma?

7. Moonstruck – Cher and Nicolas Cage made for a weird pairing, but somehow it worked. Gets to me every time.

6. The Shop Around the Corner – Like many modern day moviegoers, I discovered this gem after it was remade as “You’ve Got Mail” starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. The original is better, though both are good. Jimmy Stewart may be kind of scrawny, but the man knew how to make his woman – and the audience – feel the strength of his love.

5. Elf – I admit it’s stupid, but it’s funny, too, and heartwarming. Buddy the Elf feels every emotion to the extreme, including (maybe especially) love, and it makes for a fun holiday tradition.

4. Miracle on 34th Street – Cynical single mom and her disbelieving daughter get the best gift ever from Santa – a husband and a father who will love them forever!

3. The Holiday – Two romances for the price of one. I never would’ve guessed I’d fall for Jack Black, but I did, right along with the lovely and sad Kate Winslet. Jude Law and Cameron Diaz’s story was compelling, too, and the ending was perfect.

2. Anything on Fa-La-La-La Lifetime – I love the Lifetime channel so much that it’s mentioned in almost all of my Fool’s Gold romance novels. (Fool’s Gold has a man shortage, so the local bar caters to women by playing Lifetime and HGTV on the big screen TVs instead of sports.) If I do happen to get around to baking cookies in December, you can bet I’ll have my TV tuned to Lifetime’s Christmas movie marathons. I can always count on Fa-La-La-La Lifetime for a heartwarming, romantic holiday movie.

1. Love, Actually – I don’t think I’m giving away any surprises by sharing one of the last lines of the movie: “Love actually is all around,” said by Hugh Grant’s character as though the fact were a revelation. There’s a lot of cynicism about love in the world, but when you let go of your so called sophistication and really look at the people around you, you’ll realize something I have always known to be true: Love exists, and it can last forever.
