7 Healthy Valentine’s Day Traditions for Girlfriends

7 Healthy Valentine’s Day Traditions for Girlfriends

valentines day girlfriend healthy traditionsIt’s not just about romance and chocolate, Valentine’s Day is a fine day to start some traditions for girlfriends – and they can be healthy Valentine’s Day traditions too.

So, in honor of Valentine’s Day, Singles Awareness Day, or any day with friends, here are a few healthy ideas on how to celebrate Valentine’s Day with girlfriends:

  • Movie Date: Get ready for the 88th Oscars on Feb. 28th by going to see some of the nominated films. Valentine’s Day is on a Saturday so you make a day of it and view several films in a row – in the same cinema! Sneak in some healthy snacks and bottled water to avoid candy and popcorn cravings. Then, go ahead and plan your Academy Awards party for all your girlfriends complete with ballots, prizes, and celebrity fashion judging. To be silly, add interesting categories to the ballot for worst dress, best hair, most skin showing, best body, etc. It makes the red carpet time much more interesting!
  • ME Party with Your Girlfriends: Before you can fall in love with someone else, shouldn’t you be in love with yourself? Author Christine Arylo created a “Madly in Love with Me” Day on February 13 to celebrate self-love and independence. Check out her site for ideas on throwing a party with your girlfriends and to download a self-love starter guide as well as a Party Girl guide for creating an event of your own.
  • Wii & Wine Party: Combine some girlfriends with a Wii Fit and add some healthy snacks and wine (definitely optional–it could be a Wii and Tea party!), and you’ll have more fun than Cupid. Wear yoga or comfy clothes and bring fresh veggies, hummus, pita and fruit. You’ll have a great time and get in some exercise together. Laughter uses up calories, too, so you might want to make this a weekly or monthly tradition. Get your Wii Fit competition on with prizes for yoga class coupons, a gift certificate to give a girlfriend a manicure or a certificate for a healthy dinner at a later date.

A FRIEND is what the Heart needs all the time. — Henry Van Dyke

  • Progressive Dinner Party: Never have enough time to see, much less eat with, your girlfriends? Well, change that in one night by having a dine-around together in each other’s homes. Depending on how many houses are nearby and involved in the party, assign each destination with a healthy meal course–appetizers, soup, salad, main course and light dessert. The focus doesn’t have to be on the food–share healthy tips at each home. Make it an exercise progressive where you start with yoga at one house, walk to another house and have a light meal, then walk to another home for a healthy dessert and finish off the evening with meditation.
  • Gratitude Boxes: What is one thing means the most to women without need for a vase or involving any vices? No heart-shaped box or guilty calories–just gratitude! Who better to give appreciation to than our girlfriends, right? Have a party where everyone writes down the things they’re most grateful for about their girlfriends on a sheet of paper and places them in a box for each person. Here’s some Gratitude Box Ideas to personalize the home of these wonderful testimonies of friendship. You’ll cherish that box, and time together, forever.
  • Friendship Valentines: Remember those childhood Valentines? Silly dime store cards were how we expressed affection and appreciation toward our friends. Now that we’re grown up, why not pretend we’re not? Give Valentine’s Day cards to all your friends (even the drugstore variety). Combine Valentine’s red with going green by crafting handmade cards from recycled materials or buy cards made from recycled paper. Bake some healthy cookies or create a small bouquet of spring flowers to accompany the card. Just make an effort–big or little. She’ll appreciate it, and your friendship.
  • Plan a Girlfriend Trip: Nothing like a tempting beach in your future to get you exercising and eating healthier! Plan your girlfriends getaway now and a fitness routine to prepare you for it. Set realistic goals and inspire each other to reach them. Girlfriends who have a fitness goal and work together are twice as likely to reach their goals than those going it alone (or with spouse). So, get the girls together and make some fun plans for a great girls escape!

Nothing against candy and romance, but Valentine’s Day is a fabulous opportunity to show you care for your gal pals, too! It’s a wonderful time to express your girlfriend gratitude–make a card, share some chocolates or healthy treats, send flowers, phone a friend or just get together. Actually, every month is a fabulous opportunity to celebrate female friendship. Make it a healthy, happy and less-stressed month by spending time with your girlfriends. Happy Valentine’s Day, Girlfriends!

5 Tips for a Great Girls Night In

5 Tips for a Great Girls Night In

Great GIrls Night In tips piJust what you and your girlfriends need! Tips for a Great Girls Night in!

Is there anything better than curling up on the couch with a good drink and gossiping with the girls? If you want to have more girl’s nights in, why not take a bit of time to create the perfect night in? Whether you make sure to choose the right girlfriends to attend or prepare delicious appetizers, these tips for planning a girl’s night in will work every time.

Choose Friends That Get Along

We all have some girlfriends that shouldn’t be in the same room together. To make your evening more enjoyable, don’t put two girls in the room that are going to be snippy all night. If one of the friends who wasn’t invited gets offended, simply explain that you know that she doesn’t like one of the friends and you didn’t want her to be uncomfortable all night. You can always plan something special to do with her another time. Regardless, choosing girlfriends who get along for your invite list will ensure people will want to attend the next girl’s night in.

Invite some New Girlfriends

Introduce your girlfriends to other new friends! Invite some new women to the group to keep the conversation fresh and fun. Select women (like the point above) who you believe will get along and enjoy meeting each other. Make sure to introduce them to each other and include them in conversations so they don’t feel left out. Think of things they have in common in advance so you can encourage their connections and discussion.

Try a Theme Night

One of the easiest ways to plan an event is to choose a theme. For example, you might choose a romantic comedy that everyone loves and then make drinks and appetizers that match that movie. If you are watching My Big Fat Greek Wedding, grab a blue and white checked tablecloth, put on some greek music and serve delicious Greek appetizers and Ouzo.

Find New Drink Recipes to Try

Whether you go with a theme or not, go online and find new drink recipes for everyone to try. For example, if your girlfriends love a certain candy, see how you can incorporate those flavors into a cocktail. You might even make more than one cocktail recipe and see which one is the bigger hit. The key is to have fun, try new things, and see what works for the next girl’s night in. Don’t forget mocktails or fancy waters for pregnant girlfriends or designated drivers.

Stick with Appetizers

Last, but not least, stick with appetizers for a girl’s night in. Appetizers are easy to make, easy to eat, and can be snacked on throughout the night. You can even make trays of appetizers and keep them in the fridge and bake them throughout the night so you always have something fresh and tasty coming out of the oven. If you’re watching more than one movie, choose a different appetizer for each movie.

A great girl’s night in is the perfect way to spend an evening with your girlfriends. Best of all, it’s so much more affordable than hitting the local club or going to your favorite restaurant. It also gives everyone the chance to cut loose and truly enjoy themselves.5 ideas for GNO Girls Night Out

Month of Friendship, Day 29: 5 Ways to give a Thoughtful Girlfriend Gift

Month of Friendship, Day 29: 5 Ways to give a Thoughtful Girlfriend Gift

What is the most thoughtful gift a girlfriend has given you? Or you’ve given to a friend?

5 ways to give a thoughtful girlfriend giftLeave it to my girlfriends to always give the best, most thoughtful girlfriend gifts – be it for my birthday, holiday or a ‘just because’ gift. My friend girlfriend gifts often get my gift at my favorite shop where she lives/I used to live. It’s always perfect and perfectly Terri. My college roomie and BFF, Barb, often makes me a gift – like a beautiful afghan she crocheted for me. My fab friends Deana, Rhonda and Cath (and others – too many to name, I’m blessed!) always give me something special and, again, perfect.

It’s much more than something purchased for me and wrapped. It’s an act of love – to take time out of their busy lives to find a present that expresses our friendship; to spend their valuable, limited time selecting a gift and presenting it to me. It’s a wonderful tradition between girlfriends – to give thoughtful, personalized, wonderful gifts.

Actual, physical gifts from a friend are best when they’re something she’d ‘want’ and not necessarily ‘need.’ (Although, there are exceptions to that rule – like she might need and want new running shoes or a Fall coat.) Not the standard, ‘cookie-cutter’ gift is best too – probably not a gift from an infomercial, dollar/cheap store or drug store. Something that, when you see it, speaks to you of her is perfect.

Here’re 5 ways to give a thoughtful girlfriend gift:

  • The Gift of Time – So many of us are soo overbooked. Give your busy girlfriend the gift of time – help her (or do it for her) girlfriend gifts, weed her garden or run her errands. Arrange for a babysitter so she can spend time on things she wants to do – like hopefully spending time with you. Do whatever you can do to free up a few hours of her day. She’ll love you for it!
  • Reminder Gifts – I love gifts that remind me of my friend: the afghan my BFF Barb made me is a great example. I think of her every single time I see that beautiful gift and feel like she is nearby when it keeps we warm. Give a piece of jewelry or a memorable gift to show her how much her friendship means to you.
  • Funny and Creative Gifts – A silly surprise can help her laugh her way through what might be an otherwise stressful day/birthday. Get creative – I heard of one woman whose girlfriends rented a hearse as their limo for her BIG birthday. That might be a bit much, but you can do things like finding little funny gifts that equal her birthday years or make a funny challenge out of trivia from the year she was born, etc. Just make it a special day for her!Start your free trial now!
  • Friendship Gifts – We’ve shared about ‘girlfriend gifts‘ (where a friend celebrated her girlfriend and their friendship with a surprise celebration and friendship ring). Jill now has a ring that reminds her of that special friendship. (We have a host of gifts that feature girlfriend gifts – like above, girlfriend gifts, etc. with our ‘friendship flower.’ These are meant to express how much you love and appreciate your girlfriends.)
  • Memories Gifts – I love the memories I share with my friends. Times we’ve hung out together, traveled, shopped, laughed and cried together. Take every opportunity to make memories with your girlfriends and, for her birthday or a special ‘present, this might just mean going on an adventure together (or a cruise with your girlfriends!) or making a tradition out of spending time together (like with a book club or regular GNO happy hour). Just take a time to be there for each other.

We asked our Facebook Fans about what one gift they’d give their girlfriend(s) and they responded:

  • Joanne: My time. The greatest gift a friend gives me is the time in their schedule and a listening ear.
  • Geraldine: Lots of luv, and an undivided amount of time to listen to her!!
  • Janet: Time. Specifically….a 5-day Girls Getaway cruise with friends!! MORE specific…A Girls Getaway with friends from Girlfriendology!!
  • Theresa: A day spa with full treatment. She just had son #4 (yes she knows what caused it, lol) and probably really needs some estrogenated air as her home is filled with the testosterone of five men!
  • Alison: The ocean where she loves to be.
  • Rosalind: Cozy wine/coffee station in her kitchen.
  • Deborah: Some serenity in her life at the moment. She surely has needed it for awhile. I would do anything to take away her pain, if even for a day.
  • Auburn: A lifetime supply of Starbucks coffee, Jolly Ranchers, Chocolate and lifetime spa treatments – to all my Girlfriends. Love you much, You rock!
  • Margaret: Like the spa treatments for life. And once a year for the rest of your life a two weeks vacation everything paid for.

What thoughtful gifts have your girlfriends given you? How have you made your friends feel as special as their friendship is to you?

Just one more day in this MONTH OF WOMEN’S FRIENDSHIP, but we’ll keep celebrating all year! Tomorrow … we wrap up 30 days, 30 ways to be a better friend!

3 Things that a Real Friend Tells You | Be a Better Friend

Things a real friend tells youA friend knows the song in my heart and sings it to me when my memory fails. ~Donna Roberts

A real friend knows how to make a friend feel loved, special, valued. In our journey to ‘BE A BETTER FRIEND,’ we believe there are three things that a REAL friend will tell you …

1. You’re Beautiful (Smart. Amazing. Inspiring. You’re __insert the perfect adjective here__). Positive, thoughtful and sincere affirmations NEVER grow old. Tell her the things you love about her, the qualities that make her amazing, the strengths she has that she may not even know. Tell her what you love/admire/think about her. Tell her how she makes the world better for you, her friends, others. She may not hear that from her other relationships. It’s up to you to remind her of the song in her heart, or the difference that she makes in others’ lives.

2. What can I do to make your life easier? It’s a honor to be someone’s BFF, right? It’s a joy to have a friend who cares about your life – for the little and the big things. Ask her – what can I do to make YOUR life better? How can I make life easier for YOU? Ask, but only if you mean it. Be there for her. It might be a simple as being the friend who listens, the one who cares about her job, the girlfriend who she gets to vent to about her life but who understands. It might even be the friend who helps her by doing little things like driving her to the airport or helping her wrap holiday gifts. Be the friend who helps make her life easier. You’ll be honored to do so.

3. When there is spinach in your teeth, a rip in a very important seam, when your favorite shoes are on sale ... but holds back on the things that might hurt you (like telling you your relationship is a mess – you know it already, right?!). A real friend weighs the importance of the message with the way it will impact you. She cares about your feelings and your life. A real friend will give you grace, over advice; kindness over bluntness; love over judgement.

Girlfriend – we’re here for each other, right?

Real friends are – and they make the life we live so much happier, that they’re worth a few honest compliments, a little thoughtfulness and a filter when it comes to advice.

So, do it. BE A BETTER FRIEND. Be the friend who cares, listens, makes her life easier. (So fun, because she’ll do the same for you!)

What would you add to this list of 3 Things that a Real Friend Tells You?
