Month of Friendship, Day 14 – Host a Girlfriend Happy Hour (GNO!)

Month of Friendship, Day 14 – Host a Girlfriend Happy Hour (GNO!)

Why limit happy hour, GNOWhy limit Happy to an Hour?!

GNO time! Plan a Girlfriend Happy Hour …

or … where to wear your favorite new pair of shoes, or … the perfect end of a day with your ‘besties.’

When was the last time you saw your best friends? Got out of the house and didn’t have on yoga pants? (Okay, that might be a stretch, no pun intended.) Had so much fun laughing that you forgot all the stress in your life?

We’re on a friendship journey through September, aka: our Month of Friendship of celebrating our friends. Every day we’re sharing a way to reconnect with old friends and build into new friends.

Today’s ‘girlfriend challenge’ is as easy as sitting at a bar with your girlfriends. Host a Happy Hour with your favorite female friends. You don’t always need a reason, like a birthday or your partner out of town (although those are fine reasons to hang out with the girls!) – just a ‘Hey, it’s Tuesday – let’s have a GNO” (Girl’s Night Out) will do. Just take a leadership role and organize a girlfriend get-together.

FRIENDSHIP Peggy girlfriend birthday happy hour

Our girlfriend advice for throwing a GNO happy hour:

  • Pick a Date – Two schools of thought: pick a date that works for you or let your friends vote from several dates that work for you. Recently I contacted several girlfriends through Facebook to ask them which date would work best for them for our upcoming Cincinnati Girlfriendology Happy Hour. I was open to various dates and was happy to know they were saving the date to get together.
  • Pick a Location – What nearby, centrally-located, easy to park at bar or restaurant is most conducive for a bevy of ‘besties’ talking and laughing? Choose a location that works for you and the other attendees. Also, find out if they have any happy hour specials – or ask the manager if you can have some for your group. (Sometimes they will donate some food if you bring in a group on a slow night.)
  • Invite the Girls – We girls like to plan ahead, so try to invite the attendees several weeks before the event. Send an email or evite, or create a Facebook event, with all the scoop – date, time, place, who else is coming (potential carpools), etc.
  • Etc. – If girlfriends can’t come because of their kids, perhaps suggest they share a babysitter. Make sure and bring a camera and share the photos on Facebook or Flickr. Feeling especially blessed to have ‘besties’? Make a little gift bag for each friend (dollar stores are great for tiny gifts for such bags) or have a card for each girlfriend. Send out a thank you email/Facebook message to tell each girlfriend how much you appreciate her attending and how thankful you are for her friendship.

What is your girlfriend advice for hosting a girlfriend Happy Hour? What makes a GNO extra fun? Share and inspire!

Month of Friendship – Day 4: Make a Memory Gift for a Girlfriend

Month of Friendship – Day 4: Make a Memory Gift for a Girlfriend

Create your own memories, friendshipFor our Memory Gift … Think of all your girlfriend memories …

… laughing with your high school or college friends who got you through the tough years of guys and grades, friends you’ve met in different places that you’ve lived who always made you feel like you were home when you were together and sister-friends who made you part of their family and vice versa. So many memories with so many friends … we’re a blessed gender to have and appreciate so many amazing friends!

You shouldn’t wait for other people to make special things happen. You have to create your own memories.Heidi Klum

We’re celebrating a Month of Friendship in September. Each day we’ll share a daily way to celebrate girlfriends.

Today, we’re thinking about showing our girlfriend gratitude by making or buying a memory gift for our girlfriend(s).

Memory gifts feature an image or story that we share and are a wonderful reminder of the happy times we’ve spent together. Since we don’t often get to spend as much time with our girlfriends as we’d like, memory gifts serve as a fun reminder of those times together and prompt us to connect again – soon! So, here’s a few memory gifts for girlfriends you can make or buy:

  • Mini Scrapbook – Perfect for a BIG birthday (milestone birthdays – those ending in “0”), take your camera along and snap a bunch of photos of the birthday girl and her friends. Make sure and get several of you two together. Then turn the photos into a memory album for her like we did for our girlfriend’s birthday recently.
  • Classic, Funky, Silly: Personalized Present – Simple project, even a non-crafty girlfriend can make – and, I promise! – she’ll love it! Selected your favorite photo of you and your BFF. Make a color or black & white copy (recommend black & white especially if your frame gets too colorful and funky!) Get a cheap frame (I recommend Dollar Store). Find/purchase some scrapbook embellishments, old jewelry or cut out words/ads out of magazines. Decorate the frame with the embellishments or crafty elements. Then frame/mat your photo. She’ll love your creative gift!
  • ‘It’s Girlfriend Time’ Clock – I love this project and have made it for several girlfriends. Make color copies of photos, gather some scrapbook supplies (thin ones so as not to interfere with the hands of the clock) and a clock and make her a timeless reminder of happy times with you. She’ll love it!
  • Picture this … You and your BFF – I love a great photo of me and my friends! One where we all look happy, where you can almost see the glow of good energy that we create when we’re together and where we’re all having a great hair day! (-: There are lots of ways you can take a fab photo and make it into a permanent piece of art. Canvas People takes images and prints them on canvas making ‘art’ out of your beautiful friendship photo!
  • Girlfriend Memory Journal – I wish I’d kept a journal of all the fun times I’ve spent with my girlfriends. Wish I would have noted the happy hours where we laughed til we cried, jotted down the special gifts my friends have given me and journal-ed the lessons I’ve learned from such amazing women. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to receive such a present? Use this girlfriend journal or make your own, but capture a few of the memories you share with her – times her friendship really meant a lot to you, funny stories that you share, little memories that she’ll cherish.

Whatever your choose to make or give her, a gift from a girlfriend is always appreciated. If you have fun with this one, make more for your friends and give it to them at a dinner celebrating this Month of friendship!

Tomorrow … Day 5 in this Month of Female Friendship. After talking Social Media, we’re going a little old school. Come back and join us!

Celebrating Friendship on Mother’s Day

Celebrating Friendship on Mother’s Day

Mothers-Day-Friendship-fb

Mother’s Day is not only the perfect day to celebrate Moms but also Girlfriends! Here’s how …

MOTHER’S DAY – FOR MOMS*: Chances are you have those friends that you met because of your children. These are the girlfriends that have been through thick and thin with you. They’ve babysat your children during special date nights, have been there when you were sick and needed someone to watch the kids, etc. Why not celebrate that special friendship this Mother’s Day?

Motherhood: All love begins and ends there. — Robert Browning

Send a Card

A card with a special note about how much her friendship has meant to you can mean so much on Mother’s Day. You might even want to include a photo of a special memory the two of your have shared as being mothers. It’s a simple and thoughtful way to say how much you appreciate her friendship and everything she’s done for you. If you want, you can also include a gift card to her favorite store so she can pamper herself.

Get Together for a Special Lunch

Everyone knows how much girls love to have lunch together. Why not have a special lunch to celebrate your friendship this Mother’s Day? It doesn’t have to be on the exact day. Get together the day before or the day after at your favorite place that’s a bit of a splurge. Enjoy a couple glasses of wine and a good dessert while you reminisce about all the memories you have of raising your children together.

Do Something Special

Last, but not least, take the time to do something special together. After all, it is Mother’s Day. It might be a day of shopping at your favorite boutiques or a day at the spa. If you have small children at home, it might be something as simple as finding a quiet spot to talk or lay in the sun. Heck, even a nap can be special when you’ve got small children. Just do something you both love.

Mother’s Day is more than just celebrating families. Sometimes it’s getting together with other moms that you share a special bond with. Celebrating friendship on Mother’s Day may not be something you’ve considered in the past, but chances are it makes perfect sense. After all, how many times has your friend been there when you’ve been in a bind as a Mother? How many times have you been there for her? While it may no longer take a village to raise a child, it does often take several great women.

Take the time this Mother’s Day to celebrate the friends that have made raising your children easier.

* And don’t forget about Non-Moms.

One-third of all women do not have children. This can be by choice, circumstance or unfortunate challenges. As a girlfriend to Moms and Non-Moms, be aware that Mother’s Day may be a tough day for some women who wanted to be a mom or who have lost a child. Some moms don’t live near their children or have limited access to their kids because of custody arrangements. And some girlfriends may have lost their mom, so this holiday is especially difficult.

As a girlfriend, be sensitive to what she may be feeling. Include non-moms in your celebrations. Maybe they have fur babies (pets) or are committed aunts – they deserve to be celebrated too, right?

Mother’s Day is the perfect day to celebrate all the women in your life – family and friends. We all ‘mother’ each other in our relationships and friendships. Let’s celebrate the bond that women have and our commitment to each other and to friendship.

How are you celebrating Mother’s Day with your girlfriends?

Spending Mother’s Day with Girlfriends

Spending Mother’s Day with Girlfriends

Mothers Day Oprah quote
Mother’s Day is obviously a special day for families, but wouldn’t it be nice to do something that’s just for you?
Spending Mother’s Day with girlfriends can be a great way to unwind and do something that pampers your body and soul. It can also be a great way to empty nest mothers to enjoy the day without dwelling on the fact that their children have moved on.

And … one of the benefits of female friendship is that girlfriends reduce our stress. Wouldn’t a less-stressed mom be a great gift back to your family?! (And, living longer, being happier, healthier and feeling more beautiful are also great gifts to give a mom – more of the benefits of female friendship!)

As Oprah wisely said: “Biology is the least of what makes someone a Mother.” Don’t forget to celebrate with non-moms – women with no biological children. We all have special people in our lives that we mother and tend for, let’s include all our caring girlfriends no matter what their child-bearing status! And, don’t forget to include and be sensitive to their pain, but remember to invite women who may have lost their mom or have a distant relationship.

Here are some tips on how to celebrate Mother’s Day with Girlfriends:

When to Get Together – First of all, understand that this doesn’t mean you need to spend time away from your family on Mother’s Day. You could get together with friends that are moms on Saturday or even Friday. The time doesn’t really matter. The important thing is you’re getting together with people that understand what you really want to do during this special day. You don’t want your family to feel left out or to miss out on those special moments with your little ones, but it’s nice to spend some time just being pampered.

How to Celebrate – You might start out with a nice brunch at your favorite restaurant followed by a day at the spa or just an afternoon of talking. You could also spend the day shopping, getting your nails done, or even spend the night dancing. The key is to choose something you all love. It should be a celebration of motherhood and a celebration of being a woman in general. Just be sure you’re ready for that early morning brunch with your little ones.

When the Kids Are Gone – This is something that girlfriends who have children that have moved away should definitely do. Instead of sitting home feeling those empty nest moments, get out and enjoy the day. Chances are you’ll speak to your children on the phone sometimes throughout the day, but the rest of the day should be all about you and not letting the day get you down.

Mother’s Day is a wonderful time to spend with family, but it’s a time to also devote to yourself. You’ve worked hard as a mother, why not do something you truly enjoy with your girlfriends? Whether it’s brunch or a day at the spa, pampering your body and soul should be a must. This is also a great way for empty nest mothers or non-moms to enjoy the day without letting it get them down.
