It doesn’t take much to be a better friend – sometimes it’s just being there for each other.
I never told my girlfriend how much she may have changed my life one night. It was my Junior year of college and I was upset over a break-up with some guy. I remember the snowy night and walking between buildings and dorms crying. I remember feeling alone and hopeless. And, I remember having thoughts of suicide.
I ended up running into my girlfriend Dana and talking with her in her room for hours. We didn’t need to talk about the guy or anything heavy. It was just a fun, comfortable, accepting place for a Winter night and a confused woman like me. By the time I left, I wondered why I had been so upset. Everything seemed all better and I went back to my normal college life.
Honestly, I don’t think I was seriously considering anything so serious, but nonetheless, it still reminds me, a couple decades later, how much one conversation – even a silly conversation with a girlfriend – can change everything. State of mind, self esteem, dreams … all seem to improve when around the friends that love you and accept you exactly as you are .. when you’re around girlfriends who inspire you to be a better friend.
The sad part is I never told anyone about this – not even Dana. And the saddest thing is, that I can’t tell her. Dana lost her brave battle with Breast Cancer this past Christmas. (Actually, the memory came to me when I was thinking about her today, wishing she was in the passenger seat as I drove so we could talk like we used to.) I guess she knows now how she was a better friend – better than she even realized.
