Girlfriend Advice on Work Friendships

Girlfriend advice for work friendsHow to Be a Friend to Girlfriends at Work

I know what things are good:  Friendship & Work & Conversation. These I shall have. – Rupert Brooke

Maybe she put in a good word for you to land the job, or maybe you met at work. Regardless, working with women is not always what it’s cracked up to be. Sometimes, the office politics are too much to handle and gossip becomes a common language among workmates. Still, there has to be females in the workplace that are worth the friendship. A friendship with a trusted fellow female worker will help you both survive any work environment, or maybe even thrive while working together. Here are some tips on how to be a friend to girlfriends at work.

Make the most of work time to keep it pleasant and friendly. It’s not our imagination when we feel as if we spend more time with our workmates than anyone else. Working women spend most of their days either sleeping or at work. An American Time Use Survey revealed that we spend an average of 8.7 hours working or in work-related activities and 7.7 hours a day sleeping. However, Americans are less likely to have friends at work whom they associate with and consider as close friends outside of work. We, instead, tend to exchange the idea of developing friendships with becoming more productive while at work. However, you don’t have to substitute cultivating a lasting friendship for the sake of your job.

We simply don’t want to risk our jobs or our friendships, so we conclude that the two don’t mix well. We are reluctant to blend our work life with our private life, but the two do not need to be kept entirely separate. There is no reason why relationships with friends in the workplace need to interfere with work-related goals and progress.

Friendship at work Benefits: Less Stress and More Productivity!

Girlfriends make women: Healthier, Happier, Less Stressed, Live longer and Feel more Beautiful (that’s a lot of benefits of friendship!). Just reducing stress at work is a HUGE benefit of having a friend nearby!

Also, a Gallup poll survey, known as the Q12 Survey, revealed that having a good friend at work actually increases productivity. The results showed that employees who had a best friend in the workplace tend to be more focused and more loyal to the company where they work. It gets even better than that. The survey also indicated that when we have a close friend at work, we get sick less often, or at least take less sick days, suffer fewer work-related accidents, have more satisfied customers, and tend to stay at the company longer.

So, how do you maintain friendship to girlfriends at work?

If you don’t already work side-by-side with your bestie, the first step is making at least one good friend at work, and that means finding common ground. Being vulnerable breaks down walls and allows relationships to build quickly. Just be careful not to share too much personal information too soon or during times you should be working. Start by going to lunch with a co-worker and begin to build a relationship before committing to weekends and after-hour friendships. Most importantly, remember that gossip kills friendships, so eschew those negative conversations over the cubicle.

If you’re already working with a good friend, keep the relationship healthy. She’s got your back, and you have hers. Encourage her when she’s up for a promotion. If you’re in a position to do so, put in a good word for her quality of work. Talk about non-work related topics, but try not to isolate other co-workers to make them feel as if they sat down at the wrong high school clique’s lunch table. Good work buddies are able to move seamlessly from work-related to non-work related topics in conversations. There are some topics that are best left unsaid. For instance, don’t compare paychecks or bonuses in a hurtful, unhealthy way. Give her some space. Not many things kill a close relationship faster than feeling smothered, as if someone is clinging to your every move like a toddler hiding behind your skirt, or constantly watching and hovering over you, telling you what to do. Never, ever speak poorly about your friend behind her back.

How do you make and maintain friendships at work?

5 Mistakes to Avoid to have Great Friendships

5 Mistakes to Avoid to have Great Friendships

silence of our friendsI want to be the friend who’s there for my girlfriends, don’t you? If so, you probably don’t want to be silent when they need someone to speak up, or not there when we should be the friend who is there for them.

In the end, we will remember, not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” Martin Luther-King

I want to be the friend (and you must too if you’re here on Girlfriendology) who doesn’t make these friendship mistakes (but I have, so I’m trying to improve and be a better friend):

1. Not giving her the benefit of the doubt – Let’s start with the BIG friendship mistake. Did she say something bitchy or behind your back? Was she not there when you needed her to be? Did you hear something she said/did that hurt your feelings? STOP RIGHT THERE. She’s been your friend for a long time and through a lot of stuff, right?! Maybe she had a bad day, was misquoted or misunderstood the situation. If she’s been there for you for years, and through ‘stuff,’ give her the benefit of the doubt. Trust that she is there for you. Don’t come to conclusions looking at the negative. Girlfriends are there for each other. Be there for her – no matter what your first impression is.

2. Taking sides. Let’s be serious about friendships. If they’re good girlfriends, they’re worth getting away from the silliness of taking sides. Just be there for each other. Don’t team up with each other. Conspire on the behalf of your true friends. Stay on her side when she needs you.

3. Too busy to spend time together. Time. The most valuable gift we can give our girlfriends. “The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time,” said James Taylor. Pass time together – spend time together – be there for your friends. Make take for your girlfriends. Don’t make this mistake!

4. Choosing to be with ‘the guy.’ Sure, being in a romantic relationship can lead to some ‘friendship challenges.’ We want to be there for them and there for our friends. A true friend values the friend who doesn’t change, no matter whom she dates. A real partner will understand and value that you have your own life and your own friends.

5. Playing games. Let’s be the realistic girlfriend. Women can be catty, mean, unfair, unkind. Girlfriends can do all the above – choose who they’re dating over their friends, be ‘too busy,’ take sides or not give her the benefit of the doubt. We can play bogus games or take each other for granted. Let’s stop the games. Let’s be there for each other.

Do you make these friendship mistakes? Do you wish you had better friendships? Well, it’s not that hard – just be a better friend and avoid these friendship mistakes. Life’s too short to not be a better friend. We girlfriends need to be here for each other. We need to be the friends we’d love to have. We need to NOT make these friendship mistakes.

10 Great Ways to Cheer Up a Friend

10 Great Ways to Cheer Up a Friend

10 ways to cheer up a friend10 Great Ways to Cheer Up a Girlfriend

Everyone gets down from time to time. Every friend needs cheering up at times. Sometimes pulling out of that funk is hard. If you have a girlfriend who’s going through some tough times, there are a number of things you can do to cheer her up. Whether it’s showing up with her favorite ice cream and time for a long chat or kidnapping her for a day of fun, try these 10 ways to cheer up a friend:

1. Ice Cream and a Chat – Ice cream is always a girl’s best friend when she’s going through a rough patch. Show up out of the blue with her favorite ice cream and spend the evening chatting. Sometimes all she needs is to talk it out with someone who’s willing to listen.

2. Spa Day – It doesn’t have to be an expensive outing. Just going to get her nails done or even her hair can be a great way to cheer up a girlfriend. This is especially true if she’s gone through a bad breakup and needs to feel beautiful again.

3. Shopping – What girl doesn’t love shopping? A day spent visiting her favorite shops can be such a great release. The key is to just get her out of the house so that she gets her mind off whatever is bothering her.

4. Kickboxing Class – Sometimes to work through the pain, you need to channel that inner anger. Whether she’s upset about something at work or had a fight with her boyfriend, helping her channel that inner anger and working through it at a kickboxing class can be so refreshing.

5. Dancing – Another great way to work through the pain is to simply get lost in the music and the movement of dancing. Take your girlfriend to a great club and let her lose herself on the dance floor.

6. Girls’ Night Out – Getting together with a bunch of friends can also be a great way to forget about everything that’s going on. Whether it’s drinks or dinner at her favorite spot – a night with the girls might be just what she needs.

7. Girls’ Night In – If she’s not in the mood to go out, bring the party to her. It might be curling up with her favorite movies and snacks or just hanging out with the girls at home. Sometimes a girl just needs her friends to work through the difficult times.

8. Give a Thoughtful Gift – If you want to do a small gesture that will make her smile, buy something she likes or collects. It might be coffee mugs, magnets, or key chains – whatever it is, taking the time to pick out something she loves will mean so much to her.

Start your free trial now!9. Childhood Memories – If you’ve known your girlfriend through childhood, look back at those memories and recreate one. It might be going to her favorite amusement park or her favorite ice cream shop. Whatever it is, just make sure it’s something special.

10. Playing Hooky – Last, but not least, if she’s having a rough time at work, and is a workaholic, kidnap her one morning before she heads to work. Have her call in sick and do something fun. Make sure it’s in another town though so that her coworkers don’t run into her.

If your friend is going through a hard time, take the time to do something special for her. Whether it’s a night of dancing or recreating a childhood memory, you can help her forget about her problems, at least for a little while. The inspiring quote above is right – every day may not be good, but there is good in every day!

5 EASY ways you can Inspire Your Girlfriends …

5 EASY ways you can Inspire Your Girlfriends …

sparkle, quote, women, inspire, inspirationNever let anyone steal your SPARKLE.

Girlfriends have a wonderful way of bringing light and hope into our lives, right? Okay – well the GREAT Girlfriends do, but that’s our goal here at Girlfriendology, to be a GREAT Friend and that means we inspire our girlfriends to believe in themselves, feel beautiful and never let anyone steal their sparkle.

In the spirit of inspiring each other, here’re our 5 EASY ways YOU can inspire your Girlfriends …

1. Be POSITIVE. It’s easy to go negative but it’s inspiring NOT to. Be the friend who takes the supportive, affirmative, SPARKLY and helps her see the good over the bad. It may take a little effort to be positive when it would be so easy to go the opposite direction, but it’s kinda funny how being positive (even if you’re *kinda* just acting like it) can actually make you and her feel that way.

2. Be THOUGHTFUL and KIND. It just takes a moment to be thoughtful and kind. Be there for her on a bad day. Listen. Make her laugh. Inspire her by going a little further in your friendship – giving thoughtful girlfriend gifts, offering to run errands when you know she is completely overwhelmed, calling her when she needs to talk, asking about her day or performance review. It only takes a moment to be thoughtful – and I’m pretty sure you’ll inspire her to be there for you when you need her too!

life is a beautiful ride3. Make it just about HER. My BFF Cath is doing amazing bike races this summer – like 100 miles in one day! Make your girlfriends feel special by showing up when they do something *crazy* like ride 100 miles! Or give her gifts that are personalized to her and her favorite things. Don’t make it about you and what’s going on in your life – make it about HER. What can you do/say/give her that makes the moment and memory special? Like how special her friendship is to you! Remind her that ‘life IS a beautiful ride’ with her as your friend!

4. Give her INSPIRING Gifts. I have a rule on holiday gifts for girlfriends. NEVER give them anything you’d give your mom, a random co-worker or the neighbor who you barely know. Gifts for girlfriends should be personal and meaningful, like a mug to express your friendship or a piece of art that shares your true sentiment.

5. Be GRATEFUL. And help remind her to be too. Show your gratitude for her friendship, for the good memories and happy times ahead, for the gift of health or even the gift of time together. Gratitude is contagious. On those days when she feels down, share your gratitude and faith that tomorrow will be a better day.

And – it is pretty EASY, right? The way to inspire your friends is to BE A BETTER FRIEND. You can do it!
