10 Great Ways to Cheer Up a Friend

10 Great Ways to Cheer Up a Friend

10 ways to cheer up a friend10 Great Ways to Cheer Up a Girlfriend

Everyone gets down from time to time. Every friend needs cheering up at times. Sometimes pulling out of that funk is hard. If you have a girlfriend who’s going through some tough times, there are a number of things you can do to cheer her up. Whether it’s showing up with her favorite ice cream and time for a long chat or kidnapping her for a day of fun, try these 10 ways to cheer up a friend:

1. Ice Cream and a Chat – Ice cream is always a girl’s best friend when she’s going through a rough patch. Show up out of the blue with her favorite ice cream and spend the evening chatting. Sometimes all she needs is to talk it out with someone who’s willing to listen.

2. Spa Day – It doesn’t have to be an expensive outing. Just going to get her nails done or even her hair can be a great way to cheer up a girlfriend. This is especially true if she’s gone through a bad breakup and needs to feel beautiful again.

3. Shopping – What girl doesn’t love shopping? A day spent visiting her favorite shops can be such a great release. The key is to just get her out of the house so that she gets her mind off whatever is bothering her.

4. Kickboxing Class – Sometimes to work through the pain, you need to channel that inner anger. Whether she’s upset about something at work or had a fight with her boyfriend, helping her channel that inner anger and working through it at a kickboxing class can be so refreshing.

5. Dancing – Another great way to work through the pain is to simply get lost in the music and the movement of dancing. Take your girlfriend to a great club and let her lose herself on the dance floor.

6. Girls’ Night Out – Getting together with a bunch of friends can also be a great way to forget about everything that’s going on. Whether it’s drinks or dinner at her favorite spot – a night with the girls might be just what she needs.

7. Girls’ Night In – If she’s not in the mood to go out, bring the party to her. It might be curling up with her favorite movies and snacks or just hanging out with the girls at home. Sometimes a girl just needs her friends to work through the difficult times.

8. Give a Thoughtful Gift – If you want to do a small gesture that will make her smile, buy something she likes or collects. It might be coffee mugs, magnets, or key chains – whatever it is, taking the time to pick out something she loves will mean so much to her.

Start your free trial now!9. Childhood Memories – If you’ve known your girlfriend through childhood, look back at those memories and recreate one. It might be going to her favorite amusement park or her favorite ice cream shop. Whatever it is, just make sure it’s something special.

10. Playing Hooky – Last, but not least, if she’s having a rough time at work, and is a workaholic, kidnap her one morning before she heads to work. Have her call in sick and do something fun. Make sure it’s in another town though so that her coworkers don’t run into her.

If your friend is going through a hard time, take the time to do something special for her. Whether it’s a night of dancing or recreating a childhood memory, you can help her forget about her problems, at least for a little while. The inspiring quote above is right – every day may not be good, but there is good in every day!

5 EASY ways you can Inspire Your Girlfriends …

5 EASY ways you can Inspire Your Girlfriends …

sparkle, quote, women, inspire, inspirationNever let anyone steal your SPARKLE.

Girlfriends have a wonderful way of bringing light and hope into our lives, right? Okay – well the GREAT Girlfriends do, but that’s our goal here at Girlfriendology, to be a GREAT Friend and that means we inspire our girlfriends to believe in themselves, feel beautiful and never let anyone steal their sparkle.

In the spirit of inspiring each other, here’re our 5 EASY ways YOU can inspire your Girlfriends …

1. Be POSITIVE. It’s easy to go negative but it’s inspiring NOT to. Be the friend who takes the supportive, affirmative, SPARKLY and helps her see the good over the bad. It may take a little effort to be positive when it would be so easy to go the opposite direction, but it’s kinda funny how being positive (even if you’re *kinda* just acting like it) can actually make you and her feel that way.

2. Be THOUGHTFUL and KIND. It just takes a moment to be thoughtful and kind. Be there for her on a bad day. Listen. Make her laugh. Inspire her by going a little further in your friendship – giving thoughtful girlfriend gifts, offering to run errands when you know she is completely overwhelmed, calling her when she needs to talk, asking about her day or performance review. It only takes a moment to be thoughtful – and I’m pretty sure you’ll inspire her to be there for you when you need her too!

life is a beautiful ride3. Make it just about HER. My BFF Cath is doing amazing bike races this summer – like 100 miles in one day! Make your girlfriends feel special by showing up when they do something *crazy* like ride 100 miles! Or give her gifts that are personalized to her and her favorite things. Don’t make it about you and what’s going on in your life – make it about HER. What can you do/say/give her that makes the moment and memory special? Like how special her friendship is to you! Remind her that ‘life IS a beautiful ride’ with her as your friend!

4. Give her INSPIRING Gifts. I have a rule on holiday gifts for girlfriends. NEVER give them anything you’d give your mom, a random co-worker or the neighbor who you barely know. Gifts for girlfriends should be personal and meaningful, like a mug to express your friendship or a piece of art that shares your true sentiment.

5. Be GRATEFUL. And help remind her to be too. Show your gratitude for her friendship, for the good memories and happy times ahead, for the gift of health or even the gift of time together. Gratitude is contagious. On those days when she feels down, share your gratitude and faith that tomorrow will be a better day.

And – it is pretty EASY, right? The way to inspire your friends is to BE A BETTER FRIEND. You can do it!

TOP TEN: Great Podcasts for Women

TOP TEN: Great Podcasts for Women

Podcasts for women sqPODCASTING IS BACK! PODCASTS FOR/BY WOMEN IS COOL!

This post originally ‘aired’ in October 2008. Podcasting was growing but not mainstream. Girlfriendology, aka: Debba Haupert, took on podcasting and interviewed over 150 amazing women – including Miss America 2011 and TV ‘craft queen’ Carol Duvall. Female authors, entrepreneurs, moms, cancer-survivors, soldiers, girlfriends … we learned from their words and share wisdom.  There were very few podcasts for women then, but there were great ones and many that I have the honor of interviewing for the Girlfriendology Podcast.

It was a glorious run. But it ended. Podcasting takes time and there was little of it.

Now it’s 2017 and Podcasting is BACK! With the popularity of Serial and other podcasts, the amount of fresh audio content each week is amazing. There is something about hearing someone’s voice and their authentic story told as only they can tell it. There is power in the connection we make when we listen and learn together.

As stated above, this original post went live in 2008. It’s been very popular however some of the links and podcasts are no more. So, it’s a NEW YEAR and a NEW opportunity to share what is going on in the world of women’s podcasting. Who are inspiring? Sharing stories and wisdom? Making us laugh? Making us cry? Reminding us of the connection that all women share through our voice and stories.

10 Great Podcasts for / by Women (the 2017 version)

Note: this is our first list. There are so many others we want to feature! Come back to Girlfriendology (or sign up for our newsletter) to get more podcasts for women recommendations!

  1. ORGANIZE 365: Lisa Woodruff knows her stuff – and she knows how to keep it organized – AND she knows how to help you too! From quick tasks you can do to reclaim yourself from the crazies, to specific guidelines for your life on a regular basis, she uses her experience as a professional organizer to help women get and stay organized. (And, check out her book, The Mindset of Organization!)
  2. CAN WE TALK?: Each month on Can We Talk?, JWA’s podcast team brings you stories and conversations about Jewish women and the issues that shape our public and private lives. Alternating between a documentary style and a roundtable format, Can We Talk? includes profiles of historical and contemporary Jewish women, frank discussion of culture, politics, and current events, and little-known stories from our past and present. NOTE: you don’t have to be Jewish to listen to (and love!) this podcast! It is a beautiful telling of women and lessons we learn from each other and history.
  3. STUFF MOM NEVER TOLD YOU: I just discovered this one and love it! As they say (and I agree!): “Hosted by Cristen Conger and Caroline Ervin, Stuff Mom Never Told You is the audio podcast from HowStuffWorks that gets down to the business of being women from every imaginable angle.” Some great content like women’s relationships (** we’d love to be on to talk about Female Friendship :), technology for women (period tracking apps), women’s health, stereotypes, etc. Good gal stuff!
  4. INVISIBILIA: I love this NPR podcast on the invisible forces that control human behavior – ideas, beliefs, assumptions and emotions. Co-hosted by Lulu Miller, Hanna Rosin and Alix Spiegel, Invisibilia interweaves narrative storytelling with scientific research that will ultimately make you see your own life differently.
  5. MAGIC LESSONS: Elizabeth Gilbert, author of many books including ‘Eat, Pray, Love‘ and ‘Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear‘ takes women along on her journey through life, love and living beyond fear.
  6. HELLO FRIEND: By friend Lucrecer Braxton. First, totally jealous Lucrecer came up with this name and podcast! 🙂 (She’s a beautiful friend and great storyteller/photographer). Each week Lucrecer interviews in interesting person for their story and insights. It’s a fun, fabulous podcast (and I hope to have Lucrecer on our podcast too!).
  7. AMY PORTERFIELD: If you’re a blogger or online marketer, you probably know Amy. She’s a great resource for solid, smart information on building your audience, doing webinars, and growing your business. In a genre dominated by male podcasters, Amy is a rare female voice. Her personality comes through though so the content is fresh and applicable.
  8. GRETCHEN RUBIN: Author of The Happiness Project, etc., Gretchen, and her sister Elizabeth, have created a smart and inspiring podcast for women (and men) on happiness. From interviews with Drew Barrymore to friendly banter among sisters about life, these conversations look inside our feelings and how we can point them towards more happiness.
  9. WOMEN OF THE HOUR: With Lena Dunham is a smart, honest, insightful podcast this beautiful actress/activist. Especially her first episode on female friendship. As she describes her girlfriend(s) as: ‘Someone you can talk comfortably with about uncomfortable things’ … ‘Female friendship has been THE driving force of my life’ … ‘I love loving men, but I love knowing women.’  She defines her podcasts (for Buzzfeed) as a way to ‘celebrate the women who blow her mind.’ It’s a short series, but not short on honest insights from this wonderful woman and storyteller.
  10. BRAVE WRITER: Aimed at Home Schooling parents, the wise and wonderful Julie Bogart offers insights on raising children with curiosity, adventure, and a passion for learning.
